Welcome All To Accessibility 101

The purpose of the blog

We all love using the internet and some of us need it for our jobs or to express ourselves to many around the world. There are those website that are amazing in their design and functionality and others that are very displeasing. None of us would want that with our website and this is why we are here; to provide you with simple explanations and easy to understand lessons and instructions on how to improve your website for everyone to access, including those with disabilities.

Accessibility on the Web

Web accessibility is the equal access to information on the World Wide Web for everyone, including those with disabilities. When an individual has difficulty with vision, hearing, motor skills, cognition, or some combination of these, they tend to require special hardware or software. This is where Web accessibility comes in; the practice of creating or enabling websites to include additional functions that can allow people with disabilities to be able to access and have an easier time viewing or hearing the content of the Web page and functionality.

Some examples are links being named properly so that text-to-speech/Braille software can help blind users know and navigate, making text, images larger so that those with poor sight are better able to see them and links being underlined and colored so that the color blind would be able to notice them and having the website being integrated with keyboard functionality to better help those with physical disabilities navigate better. More advance options would to be to avoid flashing content to prevent seizures and also to include video (that can include sign language caption), diagrams and animations for users who are dyslexic or has learning disabilities.
